Communities of Action against Cyber Risks

One of the major themes in the London Gartner Security and Risk Management Summit and the Washington DC Borderless Cyber summit, both of which I attended recently, was the transformative nature of shared information in combatting cyber threats. Richard Struse, chair of the OASIS Cyber Threat Intelligence Technical Committee, spoke of the goal of that standard as creating “an ecosystem of actionable cyber threat intelligence.” But what struck me in both these summits was the critical importance of much more comprehensive information sharing than just cyber threat intelligence in responding to the cyber threats that we face.  Especially in the Borderless Cyber Summit, it was clear that building communities in support of cyber security is more than just a question of sharing threat-related information, important as that is.

This theme is one that will be explored – and exemplified – in two major upcoming RSA Archer events. The first of these two events, the RSA US Archer Summit, will be held October 21-23 in Chicago, Illinois, in conjunction with RSA Charge 2015. The second event, the RSA EMEA Archer Summit, will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel November 3, 2015 in Abu Dhabi, UAE in conjunction with RSA Conference 2015 Abu Dhabi.

Both of the RSA Archer Summits will, as always, not only be extraordinary opportunities for collaboration across the Archer community. They also demonstrate essential aspects of the Archer community that make it such an effective community of action against cyber risks.  First, the Summits bring together a large group of organizations and individuals that are united in their goal of sharing ideas, experiences and lessons learned in order to jointly improve their ability to respond to the risks all the organizations face. Second, the community uses a diverse set of tools to accomplish this shared goal. In addition to the presentations, conversations, demonstrations and explorations of both larger strategic perspectives on effective GRC and detailed tips and ideas for using Archer, the community builds out various online mechanisms, from forums to repositories to social media that are supported during the Summits and as on-going capabilities. Third, the community embraces a very diverse range of participants in terms of experience, areas of expertise, job responsibilities and organizational affiliation.

The Summits are a core mechanism for broadening and strengthening the relationships within the community and galvanizing it as a force for action both within and across organizations. I am looking forward to my own participation in these events once again this year. I encourage not only Archer partners and customers, but anyone for whom effective response to cyber risk is important, to join me in one or both of these important events for communities of action against cyber risks. You will be able to collaborate with a diverse set of individuals, leveraging a variety of tools and unified by a shared goal of responding to risks.
