Big news today – Cloudscaling, Maginatics, Spanning join the EMC family. What’s the story behind each of these?
I’m going to hit each of these in a seperate post to avoid making you all suffer more than usual from “Chad Verbose Blog Syndrome” (CVBS can cause serious eye-bleeding).
There is a theme that links these: we are dead serious about all forms of cloud models, and investing to win – organically and inorganically.
A short list of what we’re doing (some also called out today beyond the 3 cloud acquisitions):
- Investing in Cloud Foundry @ Pivotal – leading the PaaS wave in a open, multi-cloud model.
- Lead with the best commercial exascale cloud object store (ViPR Object).
- Building the right SDS stack (ViPR + ScaleIO) for Service Providers building IaaS stacks at scale.
- Lead with the best path for customers deploying IaaS Enterprise Hybrid Clouds that need rich infrastructure-level resilience using VMware on Vblock and VSPEX with a killer public cloud option (vCloud Air). This is the Enterprise Hybrid Federation SDDC update that was called out today (see my SAP example from yesterday)
- Leading with simple and small hybrid clouds for SMB/ROBO use cases with Enterprise Hybrid Cloud on top of EVO:RAIL with extra EMC goodies for support, backup and DR (GA will be in Q1).
- Lead with the best path for customers who want Hybrid Clouds for “application resilient” workloads using Openstack & AWS compatibility to support things like Cloud Foundry and modern data fabrics delivered on revolutionary “Platform 3” converged infrastructure (more to come on this in 2015). Cloudscaling plays an important role here. BTW – think about trying to deploy that SAP example from yesterday on this – ain’t gonna happen. This example highlights what these “P3” targeted stacks are best at – application-resilient workloads.
- Making “Tier to Cloud Object Store” a feature across the whole primary storage portfolio (Twinstrata for VMAX & VNX platforms, Cloud Pools on Isilon)
- Delivering the best “Cloud Storage Gateway” when customers want no local storage on premise (Maginatics)
- Enhancing the leading SaaS offerings including SFDC, Google Apps and Office 365 (in 2015) to have backup/restore capabilities (Spanning).
- And yes, fully supporting EMC storage via AWS DirectConnect and Azure ExpressRoute for customers who want to go that route!

As someone who joined EMC through an acquisition many, many moons ago (a company roughly the size of these three), on a personal note – I want to welcome the teams to EMC. It seems like only yesterday that I was an SE (#4 employee) at Allocity and sitting across the table from these strangers at EMC on an awkward first date :-)
