“Business and IT leaders agree that IT services need to match with business requirements.”
– Dual Perspectives ITaaS survey

Both statements convey the obvious. But let’s dissect the second statement for a moment, because where it really gets interesting is not how business and IT leaders agree.  It’s how they disagree.

As an example, take a look at how they view the roadblocks that stand in the way of an IT-as-a-Service end state:

  • Business Leaders: 47% believe the biggest roadblock is poor communication between IT and lines of business.
  • IT leaders: 32% believe the biggest roadblock is developing a pricing model for IT services, among other “build” challenges.

4 28 14 Keith Image 1This huge divide in mindset between IT leaders and business leaders is a reminder of an old joke about the different interpretations that come along with designing and building a solution.

To draw a parallel, IT leaders indicated a high level of concern around “solutioning” the nuts and bolts of the new ITaaS swing, while business leaders seem to be very concerned that IT isn’t talking to them about what they want their new swing to accomplish.

The lesson here is that IT and the business must collaborate.

To become brokers of private and public cloud services, IT needs to first identify the gaps between its current and “to-be” states. And business leaders must be part of this process from the beginning.  Establishing this level of communication and collaboration at the beginning sets an important precedent and expectation for the future IT and business relationship. It enables the capture of complementary requirements that will be critical to building an IT-as-a-Service model that delivers business value. And, it substantially reduces your risk of building the wrong swing.
