The Big Data Filter

Any organisation must align itself with its external environment (customers, competition,, economic conditions, etc.). To do this it must understand that overarching concept whilst understanding itself. This includes the data. Change is quick these days and organisations who cannot capture their external and internal data will not survive.  It is therefore imperative for organisations to have a business system in place (business stakeholders, data scientists, big data technology) that can understand external changes and make appropriate changes to the organisation to accommodate them.

Conversely, once a required change has been identified and a strategy is defined, the amount of data used by the affected business system needs to be minimised. In Lean manufacturing it is important that a system is achieving its purpose in a stable way and with minimal variation from the norm. If my layman’s understanding of Shannon Entropy is correct, the more information the more unpredictability. I therefore conclude that more information creates more variation or even instability.

So a Big Data Business System is needed as a “filter” to ensure that your operations are not overloaded by Big Data.
