Pushpa Chandrashekaraiah, Principal Product Manager, RSA Silver Tail, RSA The Security Division of EMC Big data has evolved significantly over the last few years. One of the main drivers of this evolution is that storage has become much more affordable. Think about it – in the 1980s it would cost nearly $1,000,000 for 1GB of storage and now you’ll pay less than a dime for the same space. With large data stores at our fingertips, we are all storing much more data than ever before. Now the question becomes what to do with all of this information. According to Gartner , getting the real value out of Big Data has been postponed because of unresolved challenges in storing and organizing data. We are storing a ton of data but have limited vision into how to use it to our advantage. Despite the advances in storage and technologies, leveraging Big Data for business value remains a challenge. This is where visualization can play a key role in supporting those seeking answers from Big Data. There are several products in the market that provide very detailed graphs, charts, and paretos, however, these are designed to look for trends or distribution. While incredibly useful for gauging response to particular factors and even perhaps predicting future trends for large groups, they don’t solve the visibility challenge. We need to understand individual behaviors and activities in a massive data set to truly make Big Data actionable. Using visualization to identify the needle in the haystack is the next step in the evolution of Big Data and crucial to making Big Data a part of our daily lives – a step RSA has recently taken with Silver Tail 4.0. The latest iteration of RSA Silver Tail identifies anomalous behavior by analyzing the clickstream and presents it in a digestible, graphical format designed to speed identification and investigation. It actually translates the clickstream into a graphic that enables fraud and info sec teams to zero in on activities indicative of fraudulent or disruptive use of the website in real time. As visualization technologies evolve, the business value that can be extracted from Big Data will increase. We are tremendously excited to be a part of this journey.
